Senior Policy Officer – Finance

Basic Salary £45,000-£50,000 Pro Rata with excellent benefits
9 Month Maternity Cover, Full Time
My client a reputable and established chartered institute based in Central London is currently searching for a Senior Policy Officer – Finance on 9 month maternity cover contract.
Developing the membership body industry’s response to policy decisions affecting businesses from a tax, finance and financial market regulatory perspective.
If you have experience in similar Policy role from either a trade association, professional body, government organisation or housing association we would love to hear from you.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Articulating members’ interests to key policy-makers and opinion-formers and by doing so encouraging government and other relevant authorities to provide a political and regulatory environment that is conducive to the success of the industry and to maximising its contribution to the UK economy and society more generally;
Monitoring government announcements and initiatives. Informing members of these developments and initiating consultations on issues of importance to members in order to ascertain their opinion and achieve coherent policy positions;
Identifying, developing and maintaining relationships with key external contacts including HM Treasury, HMRC, other government departments and (as appropriate from time to time) other policymaking agencies and authorities whose actions are important for our industry or significant elements of it;
Liaising with the media on finance and investment related issues including establishing and maintaining relationships with journalists and the media in conjunction with the Media Manager;
Promoting the organisation through meetings, conference attendance and speeches, and identifying opportunities to promote the organisation through collaborative work with other parties;
Managing the existing Finance, Tax, VAT and Financial Regulation committees and the Technical Accounting Group, and reporting to the Policy Committee as and when required;
Keeping members informed on issues via oral briefings and written information.
Supporting the work of the Scottish Federation on finance related matters and contributing, where appropriate, on financial issues arising from other policy areas;
Some knowledge of the UK tax, accounting standards, financial reporting and financial regulatory regimes.
The ability to explain complex issues clearly, concisely and compellingly to a non-technical and sometimes sceptical audience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
A degree or equivalent qualification
A qualification in accounting (eg. ACA) or Taxation (e. ATI) would be preferred but is not a strict requirement.
A good level of knowledge and experience of using campaigning lobbying techniques is preferable but not essential
Computer literacy with word processing, e-mail and internet software.
The ability to effectively manage and prioritise a challenging workload with competing demands, including those of other members of staff
